Updated 8:58 p.m. June 14, 2014.

A three- to four-acre brush fire broke out Saturday in a median of the Marina (90) Freeway near Marina Del Rey area, injuring a man and forcing the closure of the freeway for about four hours, authorities said.

No structures were threatened by the blaze, which was reported at 3:52 p.m. and burned through grass and light brush near the 13100 block of Mindanao Way, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Ninety-six firefighters backed by two water-dropping helicopters knocked down the flames in 67 minutes, he said.

The blaze forced the closure of both directions of the Marina (90) Freeway at Culver Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Humphrey said it broke out in a wide portion of the median known to have a homeless encampment.

A man found at the scene was in fair condition when he was taken to a hospital for treatment of possible smoke exposure, he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation by the LAFD, Humphrey said.

All lanes of the Marina Freeway were reopened around 8:10 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
