Update: Report of Man With Gun Prompts Helicopter Over Marina del Rey

The LAPD looks for a possible gunman reported on the roof of an apartment complex in Marina del Rey.

Two men, one with a pistol and a yellow bolt cutter, eluded officers on Monday after reports of a gunman on the roof of the Oakwood Apartments prompted police to set up a perimeter and dispatch a helicopter, officials said.

The report came in at about 7:40 p.m. and the Los Angeles Police Department set up a perimeter between Washington Boulevard, Via Dolce, Via Marina and an alley north of Panay Way around 8:30 p.m., and dispatched a helicopter as officers looked for the armed suspect, officials said.

Officers broke down the perimeter around 10 p.m. and made no arrests.

Police described the suspects as white or hispanic teenagers with dark hoodies and shorts. One suspect has shoulder-length hair.

Vinnie I heard rumors on the docks in the marina that there were hostages taken in oakwood and the islands burgers across the street. But I really am not sure.

What I think is that certain people in this town have figured out that if you want a fast (and massive) police response you tell the 911 dispatcher somebody has a gun. What's not being reported here is that they were allegedly trying to steal a bicycle. I've had my bike stolen before, just like about everybody else in this town. Yeah it sucks, but ultimately its a petty crime that doesn't warrant a massive police response like we had the other night. What an incredible waste of tax money and police resources.

Bike thieves with guns??So what are killers armed with??An army??It would be nice if the police notified residents about what was happening with a flyer or 2. Then rumors about hostages wouldn't get out. I hope it was a rumor. rochelle who lives on Via Dolce

I'm curious about last night Sat 7/21? I watched the helicopter over the marina for at least 45 min with the spot light. Anyone know what that was about? I agree, seems like this happens often.
