SoCal Gas Emissions Causes Plume of Smoke in Playa del Rey

The unplanned emission of methane gas sent fire and smoke in the air.

A large plume of fire shot about 100 feet into the air on Sunday at a Southern California Gas facility in Playa del Rey.

Firefighters responded at around 11:45 a.m. on Sunday to the methane burn-off that caused the smoke, according to Los Angeles Fire Department Spokesperson Erik Scott.

SoCal Gas crews were injecting gas into a ground storage container when it accidentally ignited. No injuries were reported. Damage to the facility is estimated at about $5,000.
