Columbus Day 2012: Is My Bank Open?

Columbus Day 2012 is Monday, Oct. 8, and that means it's a federal holiday. But not everything you might expect to be closed is. Some banks, for example, are open. Here's a list to review.

Columbus Day is today, Oct. 8, and that means it is a federal holiday. But that doesn't mean everything you might expect to be closed will be closed in the area.

Here's a quick, local review for Los Angeles County residents:

Closed:

  • Federal offices 
  • Federal courts
  • State courts
  • County libraries
  • All post offices (and there will be no mail delivery)
  • Some banks will be closed, others will be open (see chart below)

Open:

  • Los Angeles public schools
  • State state offices, including the DMV
  • Some banks (see chart below)
  • U.S. stock and commodity markets
