Huey Falsely Claims Gin's Endorsement in Congressional Election

Torrance businessman Craig Huey claims Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin endorsed him for Congress. One problem: Gin didn't.

Contrary to a tweet sent Thursday morning by Torrance businessman 's official Twitter account, Redondo Beach Mayor has not endorsed Huey in the 36th Congressional District runoff election.

The offending tweet was deleted at about 5:45 p.m. the same day.

The tweet thanked Gin, a Republican who received about 8 percent of the vote in the primary, for endorsing Huey on Wednesday.

"It was a mistake," said Gin when asked for comment. He later said that he and Huey "haven't even talked" about an endorsement.

According to Gin's campaign manager, Charles Moran, the mayor has not decided whether he will endorse a candidate.

Craig Huey's campaign manager, Jimmy Camp, said the tweet stemmed from events at a "unity breakfast" hosted by the Los Angeles County Republican Party. Apparently, officials asked attendees if they would support Craig Huey in his Congressional run, and Moran gave the impression that Gin would, according to Camp.

Additionally, Camp said that at a previous meeting for the California Republican Party, Gin said he would stand behind any Republican who made it into the runoff.

Nevertheless, Huey did pick up at least one endorsement. Redondo Beach City Attorney Mike Webb endorsed Huey in a message on his campaign website. Webb ran as a Republican in the primary election.

Huey, who lives outside the district in Rolling Hills Estates, will face Janice Hahn in the July 12 runoff election to fill former Rep. Jane Harman's vacated Congressional seat.
