Mayor Garcetti Appoints Former Academy President as Film Czar
The film czar is responsible for "making L.A. the best possible location for production," the mayor said.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti today appointed former Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak as senior adviser and director of the city's Entertainment Industry and Production Office.
"Tom will lead our campaign for production incentives in Sacramento and is empowered to work across city departments to make L.A. the best possible location for production," Garcetti said.
Sherak's appointment as head of the mayor's Entertainment Industry and Production Office is effective today, according to the mayor's office.
The 68-year-old Sherak is a longtime Hollywood insider who previously has headed Twentieth Century Fox's domestic film group and its domestic distribution and marketing section. As a partner at Revolution Films, he helped supervise the release of 47 films, including "Black Hawk Down" and consulted for Marvel Studios on film including "Iron Man."

Sherak currently consults for Skydance Productions and One Three Media.
"I look forward to helping Mayor Garcetti stop runaway production, increase state production credits and cut City Hall red tape," Sherak said.

Los Angeles has lost film, TV and commercial production work over the past decade or so. Though the city has initiated incentives for producers to stay, other big cities such as New York have offered strong competition.
Sherak, who led the motion picture academy in 2009-2012, will receive $1 a year in salary.
