Sunny Afternoons, Redistricting Meeting and Blog for Patch

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is considering redistricting changes that could drastically alter district boundaries, including the 4th District served by Supervisor Don Knabe.

Today is Aug. 9. It is the 221st day of the year. We are under a waxing gibbous moon. Sunset will occur about 7:48 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for sunny skies with a high near 66 degrees with patchy fog after 11 p.m. and an overnight low around 61 degrees. Forecasters predict patchy fog Wednesday morning that will gradually clear to sunny with a high near 65 degrees.

2. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is currently meeting in downtown Los Angeles to consider redistricting plans. A voting rights expert from Loyola Marymount University told the board that the proposed choice would violate the Votings Rights Act since it does not create two districts with majority Latino populations. A slew of South Bay politicians have spoken in favor of the proposed changes and said they want to stay in Supervisor Don Knabe's 4th District. Check back here later for an update and there's also a preview story right here.

3. The Jewish holiday of Tisha B'Av began Monday night. Check here to learn more about it.

4. Patch is looking for bloggers. We recently rolled out a new blogging platform and are looking for local bloggers to write about whatever they want, whenever they want. If you're interested or want to learn more, send me an email: Paul.Chavez@patch.com
