A Discussion with Janna Shadduck-Hernández, Project Director at the UCLA Labor Center

"Make Art: Stop Injustice"

Janna Shadduck-Hernández, Project Director at the UCLA Labor Center and a lecturer in the UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures, will discuss three interactive artistic social justice projects she has produced in LA and Mexico City.

In each project, participants embarked on an expressive journey to give photographic voice to their stories—day laborers fighting for just working conditions in Los Angeles, people living with HIV in Mexico City, and same-sex couples seeking the right to marry in California.

The projects share the common belief that people affected by injustice should pick up their own cameras and make their own artistic statements. In doing so, they create powerful tools for demanding worker justice, advocating for civil and human rights, and combating stigma.

Janna will share visual examples of her works, including "Through Day Laborers Eyes," "Mirada Positiva," and "13 Love Stories," and will describe the educational and activist principles connected to this visual narrative approach.
