As the crowd cheered, university officials savored the moment.

The 103,000-square-foot building will house biology, chemistry, biochemistry, environmental science and other science classes, according to LMU spokesman Peter Warren.

There will also be glass walls in some of the building's classrooms as well as a research garden and a more than 290-seat auditorium.

The first classes are expected to take place in 2015 in the new Life Sciences building, Warren said.
