Sony Pictures Television Networks will start a new digital broadcast channel today, featuring classic movies.

Sony announced that getTV will be carried coast-to-coast on a Univision digital subchannel or another subchannel in 24 markets, representing 17 of the top 20 designated marketing areas.

“Our programming showcases the epic stories, legendary characters and glamour of the golden age of film,” said Superna Kalle, getTV's manager and Sony's senior vice president for U.S. networks. “We believe that getTV will become a favorite network for movie fans looking for strong stories and rich characters.”

In the Los Angeles area, getTV will be carried by KFTR-DT on channel 46.2.

The network starts broadcasting at 1 p.m., with a month-long salute to two-time Academy Award winner Jack Lemmon, beginning with the 1957 military comedy classic Operation Mad Ball, with Ernie Kovacs and Mickey Rooney.

Sony expects to name other broadcast affiliates soon. The movies will come primarily from the Sony Pictures library.
