Vessel Safety Checks

Vessel Safety Checks - "A little time for Peace of Mind"

Flotilla 12-42 will be providing free vessel safety checks (VSCs) at the Basin H public boat ramp on Fiji Way from 9:00am until noon on the following dates:  June 16th, July 14th and August 18th.  VSCs take less than 30 minutes and can be performed while you are in line at the launch ramp or at dockside while you are making your last minute preparations.  If you would prefer your VSC at another time and/or location, please visit our website www.uscga1242.org/safety.html or contact Tom Howard via email at FSO-VE@uscga1242.org.

VSCs ensure your vessel meets current safety standards and that all necessary emergency equipment is onboard and functional.  This provides you the peace of mind that you are prepared to respond to any and all emergencies effectively to prevent loss of life and/or property.  Items reviewed during the VSC include number and type of life jackets and fire extinguishers, distress signals such as flares and horns, navigation lights, ventilation, and registration and numbering.  While not a requirement to obtain a vessel safety check decal, the Coast Guard Auxiliary recommend you also have a marine radio, dewatering device(s), anchor and line suitable for the depths of water in which you will be operating, and a first aid kit.  Your examiner will review these and other recommended items during the inspection.

Vessels passing safety checks are awarded a U.S. Coast Guard decal that indicates your boat was in full compliance with all Federal and State boating safety regulations during this year’s safety check.  This Decal is recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, Sheriffs, and other boating safety agencies.  A VSC can also qualify you for a discount from many insurance companies.  If your vessel does not meet the requirements, you will receive information on how to bring it into compliance and will receive your VSC sticker as soon as this is completed.

Don’t put off a vessel safety check any longer… BOAT SMART FROM THE START!!!

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard created by an Act of Congress in 1939.
