For 2012, we decided to put our local Marina del Rey spin on the traditional holiday gift guide. We got creative and put together a list of gifts for under $50 that are (subtly and not so subtly) inspired by the place we call home.
1. Gifts For the Proud MDR Resident
Everyone has that one local friend who loves to brag to her friends in the Midwest that she’s paddleboarding in December (in 80 degree weather..."take that Ohio!"), so why not give her a gift that satisfies her propensity for puffery? Here are two affordable gifts that put her bragging rights on full display: a vintage 1970s tee from Etsy ($10) and this “I ♥ Marina del Rey” shopper tote ($22.20).
2. Gifts For the Sailor
Give your favorite sailor something he can enjoy daily on his boat. The Navigation 12-piece Melamine Dinnerware set comes with nautical charts and plates rimmed with the points of the compass. And did we mention it’s unbreakable too? Not a bad deal for $49.99.
3. Gifts For the Cyclist
Marina del Rey is one of L.A.’s best-kept secrets for cyclists, since it has designated bike lanes along the western portion of Washington Boulevard, Venice Boulevard, Via Dolce and Marvin Braude Beach Bikeway. But what do you get for the local cyclist who has everything? Try something off-the-wall (or on the wall), like a recycled bicycle chain coat rack from Not on the High Street ($29.88). Or go for something more practical, like the Road ID ($19.99), which comes with an engraved metal tag that identifies the rider in case of an accident (since many ride without wallets or other ID).
