2013 Golden Globes in Marina del Rey: 5 Fun Recipes Inspired by Nominated Films

To celebrate the 2013 Golden Globes in Marina del Rey, why not get creative with movie-themed recipes from the Food Network, Real Simple and Martha Stewart?

The celebrities sitting in the audience at the 2013 Golden Globes may not eat much—but that doesn’t mean you and your friends can’t this Sunday. If you’re planning on hosting a glamorous or (not-so-glamorous) Golden Globes get-together in your Marina del Rey home, you may want to serve your guests something more original than Chex Mix and PB&Js. To celebrate the evening's awards, why not get creative with movie-themed eats?  Here are a few recipes we “adapted” from the Food Network, Real Simple and Martha Stewart.

1. Salmon Cakes in Yemen

Dream the impossible dream: prepare these affordable and easy salmon cakes from chef Melissa Darabian, star of the Food Network’s Ten Dollar Dinners. Inspired by Salmon Fishing in Yemen, nominated for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, these tasty cakes could quite possibly restore your buddies’ faith in your cooking skills.

Salmon Cakes
•    2 strips bacon, cooked until crispy, crumbled, bacon fat reserved
•    1/4 cup chopped onion
•    1 egg
•    1/2 cup mayonnaise
•    2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
•    1/2 teaspoon sugar
•    1/2 lemon, zested
•    1 (14-ounce) can wild salmon, checked for large bones
•    1 baked or boiled russet potato, peeled, and fluffed with a fork
•    1/4 cup bread crumbs
•    2 tablespoons grated Parmesan
•    Freshly ground black pepper
•    1/2 cup vegetable oil

Complete cooking directions can be found here.

2. The Best Exotic Marigold Samosas

You don’t need to travel to India (or be a British retiree) to appreciate a good samosa. Spice up your usual finger food fare with these samosas from Real Simple, inspired by The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (nominated for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical).  Hey, maybe they’re not really the best—but they only require six major ingredients and 25 minutes of prep.

Easy Samosas
•    1  tablespoon  olive oil
•    1  medium onion, chopped
•    1 1/2  teaspoons  curry powder
•    Kosher salt and black pepper
•    2  cups  store-bought refrigerated mashed or frozen mashed potatoes, thawed (about 16 ounces)
•    1  10-ounce package frozen peas, thawed
•    1  15-ounce package refrigerated piecrusts
•    1  jar mango chutney (optional)

Complete cooking directions can be found here.

3. White Cake

White cake might be a little too “vanilla”—but if any of your pals have seen Django Unchained, nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama—they’ll get the joke. You can’t go wrong with this classic recipe from the Food Network, however, we strongly recommend not serving this dessert to anyone who has the words “bounty” and “hunter” in their job title.

Classic White Cake
•    12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
•    1 1/2 cups sugar
•    2 cups all-purpose flour
•    2 teaspoons baking powder
•    1/4 teaspoon salt
•    6 large egg whites (3/4 cup)
•    3/4 cup milk
•    2 teaspoons vanilla extract
•    2 (9-inch) diameter by 1 1/2-inch deep layer pans or 1 (13 by 9 by 2-inch) pan, buttered and bottoms lined with parchment or waxed paper

Complete cooking directions can be found here.  Or if you want to skip cooking completely, just go see the movie at AMC Dine-In Theatres Marina 6.
