Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation Will Host Marina del Rey Kayak Cleanup

The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation will provide the kayaks and nets for volunteers to collect debris in Marina del Rey as part of Coastal Cleanup Day.

The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation will hold a kayak cleanup Saturday in Marina del Rey as part of the international Coastal Cleanup Day.

The bay restoration group will be hosting the Marina del Rey kayak cleanup for the seventh consecutive year, said Michelle Kearney, the group's Coastal Cleanup Day coordinator. The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation provides the kayaks and small nets for volunteers to use to pick out debris.

Santa Monica-based Heal the Bay is coordinating this year's annual cleanup along with the California Coastal Commission and the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors.

Volunteers interested in joining the kayak cleanup should visit the foundation's website or email Kearney.

The kayak cleanup will run from 9 a.m. to noon and identification is required to use a kayak. The kayaks will launch from the Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club in Marina del Rey, one of the key supporters of kayak cleanup. Other supporters include: S & K Dive, Hornblower Cruises & Events, The Counter, Boys & Girls Club of Venice, Marina Harbor Anchorage, Action Water Sports and the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center.

The REI Santa Monica store also is sponsoring a kayak cleanup of Ballona Creek and more than 60 locations in Los Angeles County have been designated as cleanup sites.
