This happened on July 9 and the pic is released today July 21?
roxana July 22, 2014 at 08:51 am
Wed July 9th and the police are just now getting around to releasing the suspect's sketch? I live inRead More the neighborhood and would have appreciated the heads up. I read all SM media and never saw anything about this. I guess it's everyone for themselves in east SM.
Nanci Linke Ellis July 22, 2014 at 11:03 am
You are making an assumption that the victim came forward on July 21st. This is not always theRead More case. I'd rather give the SMPD the benefit of the doubt here without knowing all the facts.

The CHP Officer clearly needs anger management classes, probably should be tested for steroid use,Read More suspended without pay and face possible termination. Thank God for cell phone videos ... Hard for CHP to justify such force. Honey, you deserve every penny coming to you and then some! Sadly, though, NOT ONE onlooker went to the victims defense to pull the Officer off of her :(

Too bad the criminal justice system does not take this kind of stuff more seriously. If they didRead More there would probably be fewer instances of "flight rage." Start sending these people to jail for some serious time and the message will get out that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.
Teresa DeCrescenzo July 20, 2014 at 04:04 pm
As unpleasant as I'm sure it was, how seiously ought we to take acting out like that on a plane,Read More given the serious problems we face as a society? Twenty years for possibly being mentally ill or drunk? Tratment or rehab and ban him from flying for five years. That will teach him a lesson and avoid a couple of million dollars in the cost of housing him in a prison.

Fact: People are wrongfully convicted. Even 1 innocent person wrongfully executed is too much, theRead More fact that you are ok with that says a lot about how little you actually have thought about this. How many bad guys do we need to kill to make it ok to execute 1 innocent man? 100 to 1? 20 to 1? 1 to 1? If you think that death is the only effective deterrent to crime that matters then are also very confused. Do you really think that it is pointless to put anyone in prison, probation, or fine them, since death is the only deterrent that matters? I encourage you to actually think about your position and how you arrived at that. Killing out of emotion (revenge) in no way makes murder ok. Killing in revenge is the ultimate sign of weakness. It takes strength to hold your rage and remain a civil thinking person. I couldn't care less about revenge and consequences. The criminal justice system is about the safety of our citizens, not vengeance. Locking someone up for life is enough because it removes a killer from his potential victims. It also costs the tax payers less money than killing them. Being in favor of a policy of executing people is also incompatible with belief in Christ, and when 70% of this nation claims to be Christian it should give you a good idea how many are full of shit that this is even a debate. Bottom line: No, your immature and selfish desire to kill people does not make it ok. It does not make us safer. It solves nothing. It wastes more tax dollars, and we have and will again execute innocent people because juries and judges are composed of people, and people are fallible. If you are ok with all that you should be locked away from the rest of society where you can do no harm. Sorry for the rant, long day and I keep seeing this subject brought up everywhere I look due to the court's decision. Thank you all for letting me get this out of my system =)

This lawsuit will never make it into a courtroom. And that's exactly how she and her lawyer want it.Read More The bus company will instead settle for some huge amount out of court. Why? Because that will still be cheaper than the cost of fighting it in court. That's the huge flaw in our system, and that's why there are thousands of bogus claims filed every day. The goal is always a settlement, not a court judgment. Nobody is responsible for their own actions anymore; instead we sue. Stupid SHOULD hurt; but instead it's become a payout.
TC July 20, 2014 at 11:21 am
It's nice to read posts from people with common sense @iscott, HCooper and ATC. People are alwaysRead More looking to cash in for their bad choices and there is always a lawyer waiting in the wings to take on cases of this sort.

I'm quite sure the drivers tell their passengers to remain seated when the bus is in motion. IRead More could be wrong, but I'd put money on it. I personally think the driver should counter sue as I'm sure the injuries she incurred with her stupidity has impacted him or her to some degree.

So tragic, terribly sad, just awful. Prior to the trip, don't these busses warn people not to standRead More up on the upper deck?

Please, I have a request of prosecutors, please. Please go to the accident site on the same busRead More with the same driver, denn Please take same place, on which the boy was sitting, Please Stop the bus under the bridge. Please take in your hand a meter. Sitting, please measure the distance between your forehead and the roof of the bridge. Please Write the result on your Paper. And Please ask to Witnesses, whether the boy could touch his head before Bridges. (Maybe first, oder seconds Bridge). Because The Wittness said, they didn't see. but they heard the scream. I pleased from you that, because it must be made, may be, a rules between the Bridges and double decker bus. Many Thanks, Oezden Aynali (Germany)

It's a lawsuit all right, unless (or perhaps no matter if) there is a warning sign or there wasRead More verbal warming from the driver to sit - and probably sit low - as for some stupid effing reason the double decker bus is going under freeway overpasses. These buses I generally see on surface streets. What was the big hurry (to necessitate driving on the freeway)? And aren't people buckled in, especially when riding on the freeway? The overpass I imagine comes up very quickly and if you're not paying attention, and for whatever reason stand up... Very sorry for the family and the boy's friends. A terrible tragedy that should never have happened.

@Autumn - I can think of many adjectives that literally mean "to hit hard". There's noRead More excuse whatsoever for the poor choice of words Penny used, and there are SEVERAL more PROFESSIONAL words that can be used while still keeping her headline small. Come on, give me a break! Unfortunately this isn't the first article of Penny's that isn't up to the "professionalism" I'd expect from a news writer. I have heard from friends of friends of the family the condition of the boy, but I don't feel it's appropriate to comment here about that, due to privacy issues. Prayers and thoughts to ALL involved. :(

I have flagged Wolfman's comment several times, and it keeps coming back. How disappointing, underRead More the circumstances, that the PATCH Editor would choose to leave up his/her disgraceful remark. Sad too, that Sally Tephany from Redondo Beach has chosen to NOT remove her equally disgraceful remarks. Many of us out here would like your distasteful remarks removed, if you would be so kind. In light of the fact that Mason died, it's unthinkable that either of you OR THE MB PATCH EDITOR would leave them up. Especially in light of The PATCH's self proclaimed "Community" role. You use the word "community" so many times in your "about us." It's time you put your money (or advertiser's money) where your mouth is. We have asked and asked behind the scenes. We're trying to keep it civil. :))

I love the ocean, I have been an active surfer for over thirty years and also grew up fishing fromRead More piers. The quote above by BOREN is 100% on point and accurate. Prohibiting fishing is ridiculous. The fisherman, did not attract the shark to the area or intentionally direct it toward the swimmers. The two sort of ran into one another while the shark was hooked. Just a freak incident. (while they may have been ill-mannered, there is no crime against laughing, clearly they did not think or realize the shark had bit the swimmer) We all know Great White Sharks are dramatically increasing due to the rise in seal populations. Thankfully, most of the Great Whites in our area are juveniles. If there are many seals in our area, more down south then we will eventually see more larger sharks; in which case, you will not be able to avail yourselves to blaming silly fisherman hooking small sharks off the pier. (Seals have increased from a few thousand to over 300,00.) If you love the ocean and plan on swimming in it then just deal with it: there are sharks, stingrays, jellyfish, currents, and clueless weekend boaters....among the many hazards that may cause you bodily harm. Chomp on that during your "investigation"
Henry Xavier July 7, 2014 at 11:25 am
Remember swimmers not to swim close to A PIER. (danger-danger) shark or not. Tides change, windsRead More change, different currents and lots of floating trash around that area. peace h.x.
Duke Noor July 7, 2014 at 10:05 pm
I have been surfing and walking on or near the Manhattan Beach Pier since 1964! I may consider notRead More walking or swimming near the Pier anymore though, since I have more of a chance to be hit by lightning than to be bitten by a great white shark. I do believe in personal responsibility both for the fishermen and the swimmers. Swimmers make a choice when they go in the water and the fishermen make a choice to break laws set forth. There are risks for both. More laws and bans will never change human apathy, stupidity and/or ignorance. In this case, I believe that the fisherman was at fault and he should have cut the line earlier than he did. By banning and chipping away more and more of our liberties will make no difference whatsoever on isolated shark encounters (which we've all had, whether we knew it or not).

Friends: I have started a petition entitled "City of Manhattan Beach and Cal. Dept. of Fish andRead More Wildlife: Ban all fishing from and around the Manhattan Beach Pier," and need your help to get it off the ground. Will you take 30 seconds to sign it right now? Here's the link: http://www.change.org/petitions/city-of-manhattan-beach-ban-all-fishing-from-and-around-the-manhattan-beach-pier Here is why it is important: Anyone who has seen the attached video is outraged and disgusted. The only shark attack in 100 years in Los Angeles County was caused solely by a callous, ignorant group of fisherman. In my opinion, there is no benefit whatsoever to the City of Manhattan Beach or its residents in continuing to allow fishing from the Manhattan Beach Pier. You can sign my petition by clicking here. Please pass this on to anyone that might be interested. -Ed McPherson

I appreciate your comment Jeremiah and I don't think I could've said it better myself, so I won't beRead More redundant. Except to repeat only one thing-- This is why Mr Melhman: "the age limit is based on the medical risk profile that would endanger both the employee and the public he is tasked with serving. The likelihood of sudden debilitating circumstances increases with age and these jobs have a stress level which can precipitate it." I'm still of working age yet from day to day I have bizarre health issues pop up. I run abt 3-5 miles per day, 5-6 days a week. I'm in excellent health. I'm also clever and a bright individual. Yet I've begun having pains in places, and I'm also getting forgetful. My eyesight is decreasing. I get stressed easier than I used to. Because this is our natural human aging process. we age. we just do. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now, in reading this article, I didn't read, nor did I realize we were discussing being let go at a certain age. I thought we were talking about applying for the job, where can age limit is set due to medical and statistical averages. So I agree with you, I do not think a person should be let go the day they turn 62. Most others do also, that;s why we are offered pensions at particular ages for incentive. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Lastly, your point using vote vs age limits is like comparing dogs to elephants, and completely irrelevant. We're talking about a person's capability to perform a certain type of job.
southernbelle July 12, 2014 at 03:55 pm
**** And I bet SouthernBelle knows something many women and men have forgotten - it's a whole lotRead More more fun acting out the roles when men act like men and women act like women and we all play the game and enjoy life as equal but thankfully different! **** Any good man who values his life knows women are superior to men and don't argue with them because even if you win, you lose!! :-) **** hahahahahahahahahaha!!! Yep, exactly how I feel. There are many many careers out there to choose from. Maybe a girl's passion is to put on 100 lbs of equipment and run up stairs to fight a fire and carry out a 250 lb man- but I'm guessing more aren't than are interested in that. But I'll tell you what, if my daddy's house catches fire and some gal runs up his stairs she best be able to carry him down because HIS life depends on it. And if she can't, then her taking a job she's unable to perform is just wrong.
southernbelle July 12, 2014 at 04:01 pm
one more thing--Mr Melhman, Not sure how long you've been in the area or if you are familiar with LARead More county hiring for Police and fire. But over the past 10 yrs they have had to lower their physical ability testing, as well as their hiring requirements because they had to account for women's physical abilities, and not enough men or women were passing the orals due to prior drug use (even trying it once counts), criminal records (DUI's fall in this), etc. This is also why the quality is lower than it used to be. We haven't seen nothing yet! It's abt to get a whole lot worse because no one wants police officer jobs anymore. so sad how we treat them!

Yeah..I was in Jail years ago on a false charge and eneded up being released without any chargesRead More but my 4 days waiting to see if I was going to be charged was an eye opener. 4 days in Van Nuys Jail. The LAPD were very professional, stern, but professional. BUT THE sheriffs!!?? OMG. They thought they were playing in 'Cool HAND LUKE'. Vile language and aggression like I have never seen nor heard! Constantly vile name calling and baiting of the arrestees.! Now , mind you, we were all arrested, but not yet charged, nor convicted of anything. We were just being held for possible arraignment. But the Sheriffs talked and acted towards us like we were hardened lifer's sent to Devil's Island. Filthy, vile language and aggression. non-stop. While being transferred on the Sheriff's bus to our respective courts for possible arraignment, they stopped the bus at the downtown sheriff's facility. IN THE BOILING SUMMER SUN, closed everything down, no air, no doors, nothing..left us in the sun for over an hour while the driver smoked a cig and BS'ed with a buddy outside the bus. There was shade he could have parked in..but right in the middle of the hot summer sun with everything locked down and no air. I was transferred to the Airport court on Imperial Highway. I will report that the sheriff's doing the work in that facility were very respectful and one or two I would say were 'kind' as you can be and still maintain control. But the 2 guys that transferred us..ZOUNDS!! Animals,, and armed!! They scared me more than any druggy or gang-banger I was in jail with!
