The men face up to three years in jail for taking their children in Playa del Rey.

The second of two brothers who took their sons from Playa del Rey in 2008 on a two-year international odyssey without the mothers’ consent pleaded guilty on Tuesday to international parental kidnapping charges. The brothers, George and John Silah, were divorced from the boys’ mothers and had only partial legal custody. After traveling through Central America and Europe for two years, the FBI eventually apprehended them in the Netherlands in 2010, where the mothers were reunited with their children. John Silah, 51, was extradited to the U.S. in March, and pleaded guilty before a U.S. District Judge on one count of international parental kidnapping on Tuesday. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 6. George Silah, 49, returned to the U.S. …

Water Main Break in Venice Prompts Street Closure

A water main break near the Venice Canals is prompting authorities to close off a portion of eastbound South Venice Boulevard as crews work to minimize damage.

A water main break near the Venice Canals prompted authorities to close off a portion of South Venice Boulevard on Friday afternoon as firefighters worked to pump the water out of an underground parking structure. The water main burst about 12:45 p.m. near the intersection of Carroll Canal and Dell Avenue, officals said. It started flooding the underground parking garage of a two-story residential complex in the 200 block of South Venice Boulevard, said Capt. Milton Urquilla of the Los Angeles Fire Department's Venice-based Fire Station 63. A fire engine and several fire trucks were at the scene using pumps to create a draft to keep the water from rising in the garage until the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power could shut down the …

Third Lawsuit Challenges LAPD Car Impound Policy

The conservative government watchdog group Judicial Watch is suing the Los Angeles Police Department over its new policy for impounding cars of unlicensed drivers.

The conservative government watchdog group Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit challenging the Los Angeles Police Department's new policy liberalizing procedures for impounding cars of unlicensed drivers, the group announced Wednesday. The suit filed Tuesday by the group based in Washington, D.C., is the third suit filed in as many months challenging the policy. The suit on behalf of Harold Sturgeon of Los Angeles asks a judge to rule that the department's impound policy is an unlawful use of taxpayer money specifically "to help unlicensed illegal aliens." In February, the Police Commission, which provides civilian oversight of the LAPD, approved the policy to allow a driver who is stopped for a moving violation, and who has valid …

Police Chief Beck mention the metricula counsular card as acceptable identification (Do a key words search on FBI Metricula Consular Steven McCraw Consular Cards in a Post 9/11 World). From information I've read it seems the Matricula Consular card depends on the applicant's …   more ›

'Explosive Threat Bandit' Charged in Bank Robberies

A 32-year-old man allegedly used fake bombs in robberies across Los Angeles, including at banks in Marina del Rey, Venice and Santa Monica.

A federal grand jury has indicted the so-called “Explosive Threat Bandit,” suspected in a string of robberies in Southern California, including Marina del Rey, Venice and Santa Monica, the FBI announced Saturday.  William Joseph Allen, 32, was charged on eight counts of robbery and attempted robbery. Detectives in Santa Monica used forensic evidence from a March 29 bank heist to identify him. During bank robberies, Allen allegedly dropped off packages of electronic components and wiring as he told tellers that someone outside the bank would detonate the bomb if his flight was interrupted. On other occasions, he would brandish a gun and demand cash, handing notes such as “the establishment will not exist,” if the teller did not comply. The …
