New Basketball Camp Coming to Playa del Rey

Westchester High School coach will teach two summer sessions.

Nike Basketball Camps is expanding its program to St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey this summer. Two summer sessions taught by coach Ed Azzam and Reggie Morris will be offered for boys and girls. Each player will be placed on a team consisting of no more than 10 players. Azzam is the head basketball coach at Westchester High School. "There has never been a lack of basketball talent in the Los Angeles area, our goal is to combine this talent with great coaches and produce better players," said VP of Basketball Operations Brent Koonce in a statement. "Coach Azzam understands how to develop young players as well as anyone, we are very excited to be working with him at these new premier Southern California basketball camps."  …

Dodgers Win First Home Game Under New Ownership

Orlando Magic Athlete Recovering After Surgery in Marina del Rey

Dwight Howard agreed to stay in Los Angeles for the next three weeks.

Dwight Howard, a basketball player for the Orlando Magic, will be recovering in L.A. for the next three weeks after undergoing spine surgery in Marina del Rey, his doctor said in a statement on Tuesday. Dr. Robert Watkins, Sr. operated Howard last Friday to repair a herniated disk in his lower back, and he was released from the Marina del Rey hospital the following day. “I have advised Dwight not to travel and to undergo rehabilitation treatment for the next three weeks in Los Angeles,” Watkins said in a statement. “He has agreed with my recommendation. While it is anticipated that Dwight will not be able to participate in the Olympics, I am very optimistic that he will be able to play next season.” Watkins specializes in innovative spine …

Inaugural Venice Beach Surf and Skate Fest Saturday at Venice Farmers' Market Lot

The free event will feature a showcase of products, a community swap meet, a food court of Venice restaurants, live music, a beer garden and a charity raffle.

The inaugural Venice Beach Surf & Skate Fest will be held Saturday in the Venice Farmers' Market lot and will feature a showcase of products, a community swap meet, a food court of Venice restaurants, live music, a beer garden and a charity raffle. The free event will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 2150 Dell Avenue and also will include an art show and historical exhibits and vintage bicycles for sale, said Brady Walker, an event coordinator. Organizers hope to make the event a yearly affair to celebrate the creativity and innovation of Venice's surf and skate scene. Gray Whales Slurp Up Krill Off South Bay Shore

Out on yet another adventure for their ecommerce website HookBuzz.com last Friday afternoon, Clark McNulty and fellow sailors got a rare shot to watch gray whales eating krill near the ocean surface. About one mile off the Hermosa Beach coast and heading back to King Harbor Marina in Redondo Beach, their business film shoot turned into an encounter he'll always remember. "We were headed back into the harbor, when we spotted a two gray whales," he told Manhattan Beach Patch. "Both seemed to be smaller in size, maybe 25 feet long. Space is limited in programs designed to help potential and returning Junior Lifeguards pass their entrance tests. Junior Lifeguards "is designed to instruct youth (ages 9 through 17) in beach and ocean skills. The five-week program provides instruction in water safety, swimming, body surfing, surfing, physical conditioning, competition skills, first aid, lifesaving, rescue techniques, CPR and the use of professional lifesaving equipment," according to a County of Los Angeles Fire Department website. Junior Lifeguard participants must either pass a swim test to join the program for the first time or pass a conditioning workout if they are a returning guard. USA Volleyball to Sanction College Sand Events

Sand play is now in... This year's National Collegiate Sand Volleyball Association events have been approved, according to USA Volleyball.

Sparking new opportunity for college athletes, USA Volleyball announced Friday that it will sanction National Collegiate Sand Volleyball Association events this year. "This is the sixth year of the [NCSVA] Championships and we expect students from more than 200 colleges to take part," said beach volleyball legend Sinjin Smith, who founded the NCSVA, in a statement. "There is no question that our next superstars in beach volleyball will come from these events and they will ultimately represent the United States in the future Olympic Games."
